Levy scheme on plastic shopping bags

A new scheme to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags at Hong Kong retail outlets is progressing well.

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, said the scheme, which began on July 7, was a joint effort by retailers, green-conscious consumers and the Hong Kong Government.

"Things seem to be going very smoothly. From what I heard at the retail outlets, seven to eight out of 10 people walking into supermarkets brought their own shopping bags," Mr Yau said.

"The environmental levy scheme aims to create a direct economic incentive to encourage members of the public to switch to reusable shopping bags.

"By so doing, they could help reduce the indiscriminate use of plastic shopping bags," he added.

Under the scheme, chain stores and large supermarkets, convenience stores, personal health and beauty product stores are required to charge 50 cents for every plastic shopping bag provided to customers.

The scheme follows the introduction of new laws and a comprehensive publicity campaign on the environmental levy scheme in recent months and the key message: "Bring Your Own bag".
