No.3  June, 2013

  Foreword

Director of HKETO, Steve BarclayThe Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) and the Hong Kong Inc. family have been working hard over the last year to engage with various sectors of the community. Two notable events encapsulate our efforts.

The first took place in Napier, New Zealand in early June. This was the Maori Farmers Annual Business Awards Dinner. This was a fantastic evening attended by 850 Maori farmers, government officials, bankers, accountants and so on. The evening was a real celebration of farming success and Maori culture featuring much more than the usual speeches, with much singing, dancing and of course, haka. Maori farmers and businessmen are now clearly engaging with mainstream New Zealand businesses, creating role models and opportunities for Maori youth, and looking to explore export opportunities. Hong Kong stands ready to assist.

The second will take place on 8 September in Sydney. As part of HKETO’s efforts to engage with young Australians, we are collaborating with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) to sponsor the NSW Under 18s Rugby Sevens Championship. The Grand Final on 8 September will see the 12 best school teams in NSW compete for glory. The individual winner of the ‘best and fairest’ player will win two tickets to the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens in March 2014.

Two guest teams, one a NSW indigenous team, and a representative team from Hong Kong will also participate, as will some Under 18s girls’ teams, who will play some exhibition games.

Details of the day will soon be available via HKETO’s Facebook page.
