Former CEO of Sydney Opera House to lead Hong Kong arts district body

The former CEO of Sydney Opera House, Michael Lynch, has been appointed to head Hong Kong's arts district body. Mr Lynch will assume the role of the Chief Executive Officer of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCD) on July 25.

Announcing the appointment, WKCD Authority Board Chairman Henry Tang said Mr Lynch was the obvious candidate for the role with more than 30 years of arts administration experience behind him.

"He is highly respected and has an extensive network in the international arts and culture scene which will be invaluable to the development of the authority. I have no doubt he will bring to us a wealth of experience in management and cultural affairs."

Mr Tang said Mr Lynch has long been passionate about the WKCD project, and has a deep understanding and insight into its future development and artistic positioning.

"An international arts heavyweight like Mr Lynch coming on board at this crucial juncture will strengthen the management team and widen our international network. I firmly believe Michael will inject new elements into this important project and help turn the West Kowloon Cultural District into a truly world-class cultural and art centre."

"We are now moving full steam ahead with the project. We aim to firm up the development plan after stage 3 of the public engagement exercise this summer. At the same time, we are also devoting a lot of effort to software development and educational programmes."

Mr Lynch, who has held top jobs in the arts and cultural field in Australia, serving as Chief Executive Officer of Sydney Opera House, and on the board of the Australia Council, a government organisation funding and advising on arts and cultural affairs, was excited about his new appointment.

"I am really looking forward to working closely with the board, committees, the WKCDA team and also our stakeholders," Mr Lynch said.

"The world has set its eyes on the West Kowloon Cultural District which aspires to bring the best international arts to Hong Kong, and show the best of Hong Kong culture to the world. I am so honoured to be a part of it, and I look forward to assisting in this great enterprise of creating a whole new arts and cultural experience in Hong Kong."

Prior to his work in Australia, Mr Lynch was the former Chief Executive of Southbank Centre in London. Under his leadership, Southbank outlined a clear artistic vision and development strategy, and upgraded its cultural facilities. His vision helped transform Southbank into a world-renowned multicultural district.
