  Flu vaccine funding approved

The Legislative Council Finance Committee has approved about HK$1 billion (around A$167 million) in funding for the Government to procure human swine flu vaccines, and pneumococcal and seasonal flu vaccines.

After the committee met on 19 June, the Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow thanked lawmakers for their support, adding the Government will sign a contract with qualified vaccine producers shortly to secure an ample supply before winter.

Up to 21 June, the Department of Health had confirmed a total of 320 human swine flu cases.

The Hong Kong SAR Government remains on high alert in the battle against human swine flu. Hong Kong’s experience with SARS and avian influenza has provided the city with a robust alert, detection and response mechanism for new, emerging diseases and other health threats.

It is taking prompt and comprehensive action to ensure that residents are kept fully informed about the latest influenza situation, and ways to help prevent its spread in the community when infections are detected. The Government urges all members of the community to remain vigilant and prepared, and to work with the Government to maximize the chances in the fight against human swine influenza.

It is safe to visit Hong Kong, and there is no need to cancel any trip. The World Health Organization is not recommending travel restrictions related to the global outbreak of H1N1. While like the rest of the world Hong Kong is not immune from the human swine flu, travel and business activities are as usual in Hong Kong.
