More environmentally-friendly cars on HK roads

Hong Kong will continue its drive to get more environmentally friendly cars on to the city’s roads with a growing number of motorists taking advantage of tax incentives for greener vehicles.

Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau has announced the Government has approved 7,548 first registration tax reduction applications for newly registered environment-friendly petrol driven private cars since the initiative was introduced in 2007. This is about 11% of all newly registered cars.

Mr Yau told legislators on June 10 that the number of different models of environment-friendly petrol driven cars meeting the green tax-reduction requirements had more than doubled to 29 since the scheme was introduced. This included 9 different types of hybrid cars.

He said the Government would continue to encourage vehicle suppliers to offer more choices of fuel-efficient private cars to the public, and had been monitoring developments in major car making g regions, including the US, European Union and Japan.

"It is our standing policy to adopt the most stringent international vehicular emission standards as far as practicable and introduce appropriate energy conservation requirements," Mr Yau said.

"To this end, we will keep a close watch over the latest developments in vehicle supply sources, including Europe and Japan, and assess the feasibility of introducing relevant measures in Hong Kong where appropriate," he said.
