Business Awards Officially Launched in NSW

The HKABA's NSW Chapter officially launched its 2009 Business Awards on May 15, at the Hilton Hotel, Sydney.

Mr David Howard, NSW/ACT State Manager of Austrade, Mr Ling Guiru, Counsellor at the Economic & Commercial Section of the Consulate General of the PRC in Sydney, and Ms Lorna Wong, Director of the HKETO, joined more than 100 other guests for this special event.

Mr Howard said all could play a part in the inevitable return to economic growth by adopting a positive attitude and determined discovery of new opportunity. "As the Australian Minister for Trade, Simon Crean, says, trade is not part of the problem – trade is part of the solution," said Mr Howard. "And I’d like to suggest that New South Wales and Hong Kong are particularly well-placed to play a leading role."

Mr Howard said a recent Ernst & Young survey had shown that, despite the economic downturn, the majority of entrepreneurs were primarily driven toward pursuing new windows of market opportunity rather than protecting their current positions — which was the focus for most mature, multinational corporations surveyed.

Entrepreneurs remained focussed on growth, ensuring that their businesses had the agility to adjust and to take advantage of the new economic reality. The survey had confirmed that, while monitoring carefully their cash liquidity positions, and managing risk, entrepreneurs would continue to drive their businesses forward with a focus on the key business challenges ahead.

Ms Wong said the launch marked a significant milestone for the HKABA’s NSW Chapter, as it was the 10th anniversary of the Business Awards.

Since their inception in 2000, the Business Awards had become a major feature of the NSW business events calendar, playing a key role in reinforcing the strong economic and trade ties that existed between Hong Kong and Australia, and giving recognition to distinguished companies in NSW which strive for excellence in bilateral trade and investment.

Ms Wong also referred to the significant growing trade between Australia and Hong Kong in wine. "Since the abolition of wine duty last year, we have made significant steps in developing Hong Kong into a regional wine trading and distribution hub, " she said. "Wine imports in 2008 grew to HK$2.9 billion (AUD490 million), an increase of more than 80 per cent compared with 2007. "

Ms Wong thanked HKABA NSW Chapter for its efforts in fostering closer trade and economic relations between Hong Kong and Australia. "Through its activities, HKABA NSW Chapter has succeeded in extending our reach to the wider business community in this State, " she said.
