  Foreword

Director of HKETO, Steve BarclayHong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney, and our partners in Hong Kong House are excited to see ideas in the Australian Government's 'Australia in the Asian Century' White Paper start getting developed and implemented.

Naturally, the reception of the white paper has been different amongst various political, and other, parties. However, it is very gratifying to see such differences are mostly nuances.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard`s recent visit to China seems to have gone well. Whatever the outcome of the Federal election in September, and the various upcoming State elections, it is clear that most Australians are fully aware of the need to engage constructively with Asia. Of course, to a large extent this means China, which in turn means that Hong Kong will get its fair share of welcomed attention.

New Zealand has also issued its own policy document. To make sure that we remain properly alert and informed about news and developments across the Tasman, we are in the process of recruiting a new staff member who will focus on matters across the ditch.

We also hope to see the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association stretch its wings beyond Auckland by opening a new Chapter in Wellington soon. Anyone interested in getting involved with this is welcome to get in touch with me or with Stella Chan at stella@forestharrison.co.nz.
