  Hong Kong Working Holiday Scheme for young Australians and New Zealanders  
     
  The HKETO team recently attended various careers fairs and events across Australia and New Zealand and a common question many students, graduates and young people asked was how they could apply for a Working Holiday Visa in Hong Kong.

About the Working Holiday Visa

A working holiday in Hong Kong is a great overseas experience for Australians and New ZealandersA Working Holiday Visa is a multiple entry visa valid for a one-year stay in Hong Kong from the date of entry. During your stay, you can take up short-term employment of up to 3 months with any one employer. You can also engage in any studies or training. This means that it's suitable for Australian and New Zealanders looking to do a gap year, internships or overseas working experience.

Once you have a Working Holiday Visa, there are no restrictions on the type of work you can do in Hong Kong. Lots of industries look for people for short term employment and the Working Holiday Visa provides a great opportunity to gain first-hand living and working experience in Hong Kong.

Eligibility

To obtain a Hong Kong Working Holiday Visa, you must:

Hold a valid national passport issued by Australia or New Zealand and be ordinarily residing in that country;
Intend to primarily holiday in Hong Kong;
Be aged between 18 and 30;
Provide financial proof of HK$20,000 for maintenance during your initial stay in Hong Kong;
Hold a return air ticket or provide financial proof of having sufficient funds to purchase a return air fare; and
Have medical and comprehensive hospitalisation and liability insurance throughout your stay in Hong Kong.
 
     
  How to apply

To apply for the Working Holiday Visa, you need to complete a visa application form ID(E)940 which can be obtained from the Hong Kong Immigration Department as well as Chinese diplomatic and consular missions (CDCMs) in Australia or New Zealand.

To make your application as smooth as possible, you'll need to provide the following:
 
     
 
A photocopy of your travel document, showing your personal particulars, nationality, date of issue and expiry of the travel document (this would be your passport);
Financial proof for maintenance during the proposed stay in Hong Kong (e.g., bank statements, savings account passbooks etc);
A photocopy of your return air ticket or financial proof of having an amount equivalent to the return air fare; and
A cashier order/bank draft for payment of visa fee if the application is submitted to the Hong Kong Immigration Department directly. Completed visa applications and the necessary supporting documents should be submitted directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department by post or to the CDCMs.
 
     
  It normally takes about two weeks to process a visa application. If your application is successful, an entry visa will be mailed directly to you or issued to your through the relevant CDCMs. To start your Working Holiday in Hong Kong, you just need to bring the visa together with your passport or travel document when you arrive in Hong Kong!
