Asian Financial Forum addresses key global financial and economic issues

Panelists at the Asian Financial Forum.Against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, the Asian Financial Forum (AFF) held on the 14 -15th January in Hong Kong, brought together over 2,000 leaders in finance from across the globe to share insights into the latest global and regional economic and financial developments.

This year's forum focused on the ways Asia is shaping the global economy.

Professor K C Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury spoke at AFF.Hong Kong Chief Executive Mr Leung, who opened the event, pointed out the notable swing to the East in terms of financial opportunities and talent, with investors eager to be part of region's economic growth.

"Asia is no longer simply a 'factory of the world'; it is a facilitator of inclusive growth and prosperity on the back of rising consumption and wealth creation. I am confident that Hong Kong will continue to play an important role in the Asian Century," said Mr Leung.

Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan was also present at the event. He said his fourth visit to Hong Kong would allow him to promote Australia's economic interests in Asia.

In particular, he stressed how Australia welcomed the internationalisation of the renminbi and Hong Kong's role in this process.

"[Hong Kong] is at the centre of vital reform pathways like China's gradual transition towards an open capital account and a convertible currency. Australia strongly supports these... efforts, with the internationalisation of the renminbi as the first step along the way," said Mr Swan.

The event featured sessions which dealt with issues such as global investment opportunities, investment opportunities in China, the Eurozone's future risk management framework, the implications of the liberalisation of China's financial system and how Asian economies can further co-operate.

The annual forum, held since 2007, was co-organised by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Over the years it has featured high profile speakers such as Lawernce H Summers, former US Secretary of the Treasury; Zhun Min, Deputy Managing Director at the International Monetary Fund; Norman Chan, Chief Executive at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Ms Anita Fung, CEO of HSBC Limited.
