Visit to heart of North Island, NZ

Director of HKETO, Mr Steve Barclay and his deputy, Ms Linda Law went on a five-day visit to North Island, New Zealand (NZ) in early December to get first hand experience of the area and promote the business and trade opportunities of Hong Kong.

They held meetings and speaking engagements and called on exporters, local businesses, export and trade associations at the cities of Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua and Hamilton.

In Auckland they attended a packed breakfast organized by the Hong Kong NZ Business Association and met with senior government officials including Mr Bill English, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

Mr Barclay spoke at the Breakfast Briefing hosted by the Export New Zealand Bay of Plenty Branch in Tauranga to share with them Hong Kong's advantages as the business capital of Asia.

He emphasized the advantages brought about by signing of the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEP) between Hong Kong and NZ in March.

"The CEP offers NZ exporters greater security of duty-free access to the Hong Kong market. In many cases, clearance of NZ goods within 48 hours of the time of arrival is guaranteed, " he noted.

In Hamilton, Mr Barclay and Ms Law met with the Chief Executive Officer of the Waikato Chamber of Commerce, Mr Wayne Walford on Hong Kong's role as the gateway to China.

During the five-day visit, they had called on a stud farm at Waikato which is home to "O'Reilly" one of Hong Kong's top racing horses. They also paid visits to local businesses that were trading partners of Hong Kong including Zespri which exports kiwifruits and Comvita, the health care product company.
