Negotiation on free-trade agreement between Hong Kong and Australia launches
Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So and the Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo announced on 16 May  the official launch of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiation between Hong Kong and Australia. Mr So said that the FTA between Hong Kong and Australia would foster economic development between the two economies, and was conducive to strengthening Hong Kong's role as an international trade, commerce and financial centre. The agreement would be instrumental in providing a new platform for enhancing capital flow, innovation, interaction between professionals and R&D (research and development) collaborations which were the cornerstones for the two economies to venture into new frontiers and stay ahead in globalisation. NZ Prime Minister visits Hong Kong
The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr Bill English visited Hong Kong between 18 and 20 May. He met with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr C Y Leung on 19 May to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.  Mr Leung expressed the hope that the two places would continue to strengthen exchanges and co-operation on various fronts and explore more business opportunities by leveraging Hong Kong’s huge development potential in the country's Belt and Road Initiative.   Australian premiere of Hong Kong Philharmonic wins applause
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) made its first ever performances in Australia at Arts Centre Melbourne on 4 May and at Sydney Opera House on 5 May with internationally acclaimed Jaap van Zweden conducting and renowned violinist Ning Feng as soloist. The performance was part of the orchestra’s five city tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, and to mark the beginning of a series of celebration events arranged by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Australia for the 20th anniversary.   Melbourne showcases design strength at Business of Design Week 2018
The Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the State Government of Victoria signed a Letter of Intent in Hong Kong on 17 May to officially signify partnership between Hong Kong and Melbourne for the Business of Design Week (BODW) 2018.  The BODW, HKDC’s flagship programme with Create Hong Kong of the HKSAR Government as the major sponsor, and HKTDC as the co-organiser, is Asia’s leading annual event on Design, Innovation and Brands attracting typically more than 120,000 leading international designers, businesses and public from around the world to participate in the week-long event.  Read more about the story here.
 
     
  Hong Kong – Australia Renminbi Trade and Investment Dialogue
The fourth Hong Kong – Australia Renminbi (RMB) Trade and Investment Dialogue was held on 27 April as part of the RMB Global Cities Dialogue to promote the opportunities associated with the internationalisation of RMB and Chinese capital to “go global”. Participated by experts from Hong Kong and Australian financial communities, the event explored the opportunities for Hong Kong and Australia arising from China's increasing investment links with the world, fuelled further by the implementation of the Belt and Road strategy and the continued liberalisation of its financial markets. Read more here.
