Hong Kong Team wins World Rope Skipping Championship

Record breaker: Hong Kong's Ho Chu-ting won the individual championship at the FISAC World Rope Skipping Championships 2014.The FISAC World Rope Skipping Championships 2014 (WRSC 2014) was held in Hong Kong from July 27 to August 5, and the Hong Kong team won the World Cup division, followed by the Belgium and Australian team.

Once a mere leisure activity, rope skipping has evolved into a global competitive sport in which the first international competition was held in Australia in 1997. The WRSC is held bi-annually and Hong Kong beat South Korea as the first Asian city to host this year's event at the MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok and the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom.

Approximately 1,000 athletes from over 20 countries and regions took part in WRSC 2014, and 159 Hong Kong team members competed in the master, speed and team categories of the championships.

This year marked the largest delegation Hong Kong has ever sent to the championship, and the team won a total of 92 medals, beating their tally of 40 medals two years ago. They won 29 gold, 30 silver and 33 bronze medals, with some of the team members breaking world records.

Timothy Ho Chu-ting, 19, won the individual championship with three medals - one gold, one silver and one bronze, and also broke the world record in the three-minute master male competition with 522.5 skips.

The Hong Kong team also beat Belgium to take the Championships' World Cup division.

The remarkable results achieved by the Hong Kong team proved that their intense training had paid off. Their team spirit and tenacity were worth a compliment.
