Hong Kong House to be part of Sydney Open 2014

Hong Kong House – A former banking chamber and hotel is now home of the Hong Kong offices.Hong Kong House, a historic building located in the heart of Sydney, will open its doors as part of the biennale Sydney Open where over 50 of Sydney’s best loved buildings will be open for urban exploration.

Hong Kong House, located on 80 Druitt Street, contains the offices of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO), Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and InvestHK.

It is a remarkable late-nineteenth century building, which stands at the corner of York and Druitt Street in central Sydney. The urban space created by the Town Hall, the Queen Victoria Building, and Hong Kong House is an engaging triangular public space, which links three significant late-nineteenth century buildings.

Although the building started life as the Central Hotel, the name was soon altered to the more Irish-sounding Hotel Gresham. But, names aside, it became one of the finest watering holes in the city, a genteel space for bending the elbow.

During the late 20th century the hotel started to decline markedly in status, amid keen competition from the newer Sydney hotels. It finally succumbed to a change of use in the 1980s and was converted to offices and shops.

In the mid-1990s the Hong Kong Government purchased the building. With its decorative stone facade and ornate Victorian aesthetic, Hong Kong House remains an important part of the Sydney Town Hall precinct. It is listed on the State Heritage Register, the Register of the National Estate and the National Trust (NSW) Register.

Sydney Open is now in its 10th year and attendees will need to register to access to Sydney’s most intriguing and historical buildings.
