Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So at the opening reception of the Hong Kong Festival in Wellington.Earlier this month, Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Mr Gregory So visited New Zealand to promote closer ties between Hong Kong and the country.

During his visit Mr So met with Hong Kong people working, studying and living in Auckland and addressed a Connect Hong Kong business seminar organised by the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association.

The seminar, entitled "Hong Kong - The Best Platform for Business Engagement with China and Asia", was also attended by representatives from Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Invest Hong Kong who outlined the city’s strengths in attracting investment and developing businesses.

"Hong Kong provides the shortest and most reliable route for New Zealand companies to do business in the Mainland of China. We are also an effective connector to markets across our region," Mr So told seminar attendees.

He noted that Hong Kong was the seventh largest market for New Zealand goods exports, and in the past decade the value of New Zealand goods exported to Hong Kong had increased 40%, to about HK$5.25 billion (NZ$ 870 million) last year.

Hong Kong's unique advantages - a comprehensive network of professional services, unparalleled access to the Mainland market, bilateral trade agreements and the position as the world's freest economy - makes Hong Kong a showcase for New Zealand brands of goods and services, he said.

During his four day visit, Mr So also spoke at the opening reception of the annual Hong Kong Festival in New Zealand. The Festival, now in its fourth year, promotes the arts, culture and opportunities in Hong Kong and includes a series of photo exhibition, film festivals, business workshops and networking events.

Mr So also called on a number of New Zealand Ministers, including the Minister for Commerce, Minister for Broadcasting and Minister for Consumer Affairs Craig Foss, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Bill English, Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, House of Representatives Speaker David Carter, and Minister for Economic Development Steven Joyce.

The Hong Kong Festival in New Zealand occurs in Auckland and Wellington. For more information about the Festival, please visit http://www.hkfestival.org.nz/
