Hong Kong and New South Wales Rugby Union sign Schoolboys Rugby Agreement

NSW Rugby Union Board Chairman Nick Farr-Jones with Director of HKETO, Steve BarclayHong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Sydney has signed the official agreement to sponsor the Hong Kong NSW Schoolboys Sevens 2013 Championship organised by the New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU). This covers the championship finals to be held on 8 September 2013 as well as the NSW schools rugby play-offs currently underway.

Director of HKETO, Steve Barclay, signed the agreement last month with NSW Rugby Union Board Chairman Nick Farr-Jones. This is the first time NSWRU have worked with another organisation to facilitate the growth of schoolboy Rugby Sevens in NSW.

Key sponsors of the championship, including Hong Kong Tourism Board, Cathay Pacific and HSBC, were also on hand to speak of their commitment and involvement in the championship. The signing ceremony was attended by students and principals from NSW schools currently playing in the championship playoffs.

Mr Barclay said the agreement was a way to strengthen the existing relationships between Hong Kong and Australia.

“Raising awareness of Hong Kong amongst young Australians is important to ensure the continued relevance of Hong Kong in business, academic, sports, culture and tourism arenas in future years,” said Mr Barclay.

“Given the importance of sports in Australia and Hong Kong’s own world-famous Rugby Sevens tournament, our sponsorship of NSW Schoolboys Sevens is a natural fit.”

Chairman of the NSWRU Board, Mr Nick Farr-Jones said the agreement also represents NSWRU’s continued efforts to raise the profile of rugby amongst schoolboys in the state.

“We’re very excited that HKETO are sponsors of the Hong Kong NSW Schoolboys Sevens 2013 Championship. With Rugby Sevens now recognised as an Olympic sport and making its debut in the 2016 Summer Olympics, this schoolboys initiative will no doubt help generate further interest in our sport.”

As part of the Hong Kong NSW Schoolboys Sevens 2013 Championship, HKETO and NSWRU are hosting a Facebook competition - for every ‘like’ you make on the HKETO Facebook album for this event, you’re in the running to win a signed 2013 Waratah Jersey and prizes from the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office.
