  Foreword

Steve BarclayAs another year draws to a close, I would like to reflect on young Australian and New Zealanders' perceptions and experiences of Hong Kong.

When I arrived in Sydney in mid-2010 I had expected that most Aussies and Kiwis would have a good understanding of Hong Kong. I quickly found that most people had forgotten about us.

Obviously, remedying that became a major focus of my work.

But worse was to come. Young Aussies and Kiwis had not forgotten us. Most never knew about us in the first place!

Attempting to address this knowledge gap became another major focus. We have adopted a variety of approaches to connect with today's youth... through sports, social media, events at schools and universities, promoting education, work and visit opportunities etc. I am very pleased to say that this dovetails with the concerns of both the Australian and New Zealand governments, who are both promoting Asian awareness among young people.

In 2014 we will continue the work on this that we have started in Australia , and will be looking to start making a much greater impact in New Zealand.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous 2014.
