Steve Barclay, Director of HKETO, speaking at the 'Hong Kong and Guangzhou - Your Business Partner in China' Seminar in AucklandIn its latest efforts to engage with New Zealand companies and young professionals, representatives from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Sydney (HKETO) recently undertook a visit to Auckland and Wellington.

Steve Barclay, Director of HKETO, said the purpose of the visit was two-fold: to show local businesses why Hong Kong is a launching pad into the Chinese market and to introduce Hong Kong to young New Zealanders.

During the visit, Mr Barclay and his delegation - including three new officers; Deputy Director Bernard Lo, Head of Public Relations Rimy Choi and New Zealand Project and Research Officer Marcus Fung - attended a seminar which highlighted Hong Kong and Guangzhou's strategic advantages for local businesses looking to expand into Asia.

“Over 170 senior business executives attended the event and our colleagues at Invest Hong Kong have been busy following up with enquiries! The enthusiastic response shows New Zealander’s keen interest in Hong Kong and the region,” said Mr Barclay.

In terms of reaching out to young New Zealanders, Deputy Director Bernard Lo highlighted a key meeting with the Asia New Zealand Foundation, an organisation which aims to build a better understanding of Asia amongst New Zealanders.

“During our meeting with the Foundation, we explored how HKETO could encourage students and young professionals to engage with Hong Kong,” said Mr Lo.
