The championship, co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (HKETO) and the New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU), celebrated the best of the best schoolboy Rugby Sevens teams in NSW and the relationship between Hong Kong and Australia through sports.

The Director of HKETO Steve Barclay said the event was a way for local students to understand more about Hong Kong through sports.

“They say sports cuts across cultures and we saw exactly that during the championship, where schoolboys and schoolgirls were asking questions about Hong Kong. Our intention behind this event was to educate students and communities about the city - like how Hong Kong is an ideal place for a global career since it’s a gateway to China,” said Mr Barclay.

“We also want to show students why Hong Kong is a great place to live, study and visit. Of course, let’s not forget the city also hosts one of the best Rugby events - the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.”

Speaking at the Finals, Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver said the event was a success on many levels.

“Of course we’re thrilled the event was well attended, but it was ultimately about the kids so it was great to see them form new friendships with others from different schools and regions,” Mr Pulver said.

“This event highlights why Rugby Sevens is a key priority for Australian Rugby. It’s entertaining, kid-friendly and provides so many opportunities on an international scale at all levels.

“Through this great form of Rugby, the students had the chance to learn more about Hong Kong, its culture and how it celebrates Sevens,” Mr Pulver said.
